Where: North Carolina National Guard Joint Force Headquarters (Auditorium), 1636 Gold Star Dr, Raleigh, NC 27607

PDHs: May be worth 4 Professional Development Hours, depending on the requirements.

What: The society for the PENC (Professional Engineers of North Carolina) is organizing a group session to provide training to become pre-qualified as a Damage Assessment Volunteer Worker for the NC Dept of Public Safety: Emergency Management.
This training is for those who, during a future major disaster, may wish to volunteer as helpers to assess the damage and expedite assistance for those affected.

Background: The damage caused by the flooding from Hurricane Matthew was massive and affected many people in the state. A call for volunteers to assist in assessing the damage yielded many helpers, but since they weren't pre-trained in performing this kind of work, it took a while to get them deployed. We want to improve our response time. That is why we are calling for volunteers that are willing to be pre-trained and placed on the call list for quick response. This PENC volunteer call list will be used to determine the availability of volunteers to be deployed to assist in Substantial Damage Estimates when and where they are needed.

Being on the list does not commit you to participate, but it does mean you will be one of the first called to assist.

Training sessions will be approximately 4 hours and will include everything you will need to be deployed as quickly as you are available after a flooding event. Lunch will be provided by PENC.

Qualification: You must have a PE or EI Certification (Our understanding at this time is that nothing will need to be sealed. The need is for volunteers to have the technical aptitude for damage assessment based on FEMA guidance. You do not have to be a structural engineer.)

Computers/Software: You do NOT need computers for this training. This will be an informational training. If called to volunteer for an event, there will be hands on training available to use the appropriate field laptops and software on site the day of volunteering.

PDHs: There will be 4 PDHs available for this training. Note that while PENC offers Professional Development credit for this program, it is up to each individual Professional Engineer to determine if the content is relevant to his/her individual practice and suitable for his/her continuing education.

To request training:

Send via email your name and cell phone number to:
Catie Cox, PENC Membership Director
catie.c@penc.org

If approved, you will receive a confirmation back via email.
Even if you can't attend a training you will still be placed on our on-call list in case of an event.
